Weighting Material

BARITE

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

BARITE (BaSO4) weight material is a high-quality, drilling-grade barite (barium sulfate) used to increase the densities of oil-based and water-based drilling fluids to 21 lbs/gal (2516 kg/m³).

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Appearance Powder, various light colors; gray, pink, tan
Specific Gravity 4.2g/cm3
Solubility Insoluble in water

APPLICATION

Due to its high density and low cost, BARITE is the most commonly used weighing material. BARITE weighed mud is as heavy as 20 PPG (S.G. 2.4) and still remains pump able, controls formation pressures, and stabilizes the borehole.

RECOMMENDED TREATMENT

The amount of BARITE required to increase the density can be calculated with the following formulas:

  • Barite required: BARITE, lb/bbl = [1470 (W2 - W1)] / (35 - W2)
  • Where, W1 = Initial weight (ppg), W2 = Desired final weight (ppg)

PACKAGING

BARITE is available in 25 kg sacks, palletized as 40 sacks per pallet. It is also available in 1 MT Big Bags and bulks.
